My Splinterlands Blog #163 – Ranked Rework & New Players

Welcome to another article where I write about my journey playing Splinterlands! As updates are moving to every other week, as well as the public Town Halls, there’s a bit less to write about in terms of game news. I’m going to touch upon some of the items talked about in the last Town Hall, which I kind of passed over last time.

There’s been talk about the removal of both summoner level caps and the ability to decline advancing leagues in Ranked play as the plan to fix the new player experience. This essentially makes every league run under the current Diamond/Champion rules, making it theoretically easier to advance through lower leagues if you are willing to spend on higher level cards. When this is first implemented, things will probably be quite ugly as people stuck in lower leagues with higher level cards smash through anyone playing with what is historically the capped cards for that league.

This change does reward combining cards to be higher level, which has been a stated goal of the game. It does feel like more of a push in a pay-to-win direction, though the concept is that people will eventually balance out to be playing others with similar collections and skill. The problem there may be with match liquidity – or, who is playing at the same time as you. Unless you are playing at the same time as people with similar cards and skill, you may end up punching up or down against your opponents.

Either way, it’s an interesting idea to try to rework things. If it doesn’t work out, then they can always try something different. It also sounds like the leaderboards would be removed outside of Champion, which would reduce the outflow of Dark Energy Crystals as rewards. This change may also help boost the rental market for higher level cards.

There will probably also be other changes, but that’s the main one from what I gathered. Aside from the season wrapping up, that’s about all the news this week. I didn’t open any new packs, outside of ones from brawls.

Brawls

Guild Brawl #193 playing Bronze League Gold Foil Only. The guild came in 4th place, which is at least progress from the previous brawl cycle. I also had a lot of opponents this time around.

Vs. GODKHA2 of ELIGEN

Vs. GOLDCOMMONLOVER of DIAMOND HANDS

Vs. MONSTER.007 of OLD LEGENDARY DRAGONS

Vs. DRAGONMASTERONE of SPLINTERLANDS-DE

Vs. DELLAPAPI of CONQUESTS OF KIBANDIA

Vs. LUCIDOBURRITO of IMMORTAL GODS 7

Vs. MORNWOOD of SONS OF ARDA

Guild Brawl #194 playing Bronze League Gold Foil Only. The guild came in third place, as we continue to move up one spot per brawl.

Vs. DZFILOW of THE KING

Vs. UNLEASPOWER of TEAM POSSIBL PHALANX

Vs. ISLANDIA of WASH-RINSE-REPEAT

Vs. AKUMAOG of THE AGED AVENGERS

I also opened up another Gladiator pack:

Always nice to get two rare cards, instead of the minimum one.

The Rest:

I was able to advance up to Diamond II in Wild on my main account before the season ended, and I remembered to move up to Gold III in Wild on my alternate account. This was the season where I was getting Silver chests on my alternate account, due to my forgetting to advance the previous end of season. Here’s what I got on my two accounts, starting with the Silver chests:

Even though I got quite a large number of chests, there was nothing particularly notable. A few decent, for Silver, Splintershard Token (SPS) rewards, but no gold foil or legendary cards. Heck, not even an epic card!
The Diamond chests on my main had significantly better SPS rewards, and at least a couple of epic cards, along with one gold foil common card.

That’s about it for this week. There should be a bit more news with the next update coming before the mid-season point. My goal, as always, is to try to get up into Diamond on my main account and hit the top of Silver on my alt. Thank you for reading, and I’ll be back in about a week with my next update!
