My Splinterlands Blog #129 – Modern Considerations & That New Promo Card

Welcome to another article where I write about my journey playing Splinterlands! One thing that I kind of skipped over completely last week was the release of the new promo card, Zyriel, the first multi-element monster. As a legendary, it is being sold at 80,000 DEC per level 1 copy, or 40,000 DEC + 160 Vouchers.

Zyriel is on sale for 30 days total, with about 24 days remaining at the time of this writing. So far, about 1/3 of them have been sold.

It is an interesting card, with some decent utility in certain situations, but it is also a bit out of my price range at the moment. I have enough upcoming expenses with land 1.5 on the horizon, both with needing enough DEC to stake on my land and getting enough monsters for land without completely cannibalizing my deck I play with. Long story short, I have not bought a copy.

The proposal to ban bots in Modern passed, which makes me think that I should move over to that league. I actually did this season with my Silver league alternate account to test the waters, and was able to get back up to Silver I in a couple of days. My Gold account is lower on energy though, and I’d essentially need to skip getting chests for a day or two to get that account up.

I should note that the proposal hasn’t actually been enacted yet, so there are still plenty of bot accounts in modern Silver league. The only other item of note is a new, seemingly rare, rule set was added that gives all monsters Rebirth. With the recent news covered, up next is my breakdown of the past week.

Daily Quest Rewards:

Daily Quest # 948. Got Stealth Focus on my main account in Gold league. I received 0.471 Splintershard tokens (SPS), 56 Merits, and 4 Pembrook Nymph (rare summoner).

InvestYGator, my Silver league alternate account got Earth Focus. I started grinding through Bronze in modern and got 0.121 SPS.

Daily Quest # 949. Got Death Focus. I received 268 (156 + 112) Merits and a Chaos Legion pack!

InvestYGator got Defend Focus. I got 1.394 SPS, 1 Legendary potion, and a Thane Newsong (epic monster) having made it up to Bronze I in Modern.

Daily Quest # 950. Got Disable Focus. I received 0.455 (0.244 + 0.211) SPS, 2 Firecallers (common monster), an Imperial Knight (common monster), and 5 (4 + 1) Pyrewatch Devils (rare monster).

InvestYGator got Earth Focus. I got 0.173 (0.109 + 0.064) SPS and a Swamp Spitter (common monster). I failed to record when I got back to Silver, but I believe it was here.

Daily Quest # 951. Got Disable Focus. I received 0.362 SPS, 10 Legendary potions, 33 Merits, 18 (9 + 9) Gold potions, and 2 War Pegasus (rare monster).

InvestYGator got Death Focus. I got 0.613 (0.117 + 0.078 + 0.111 + 0.307) SPS, 44 (20 + 24) Merits, 2 Legendary potions, and 2 Wily Coyotians (common monster).

Daily Quest # 952. Got Stealth Focus. I received 0.263 SPS, 6 Gold potions, 6 Wily Coyotian, 7 Gobson Bombers (common monster), and 4 Coastal Sentry (common monster).

InvestYGator got Fire Focus. I got 0.064 SPS, 3 Gold potions, 124 (60 + 20 + 20 + 24) Merits, a Gobson Bomber, and a Ferox Defender (common monster).

Daily Quest # 953. Got Stealth Focus. I received 2.023 (0.208 + 1.815) SPS, 12 Gold potions, 3 Imperial Knights, and 4 (1 + 3) Ferox Defenders.

InvestYGator got Disable Focus. I got 0.367 (0.127 + 0.072 + 0.078 + 0.09) SPS, 1 Gold potion, a Terraceous Grunt (common monster), a Ravenhood Warden (rare monster), and a gold foil Terraceous Grunt.

Daily Quest # 954. Got Flying Focus. I received 33 Merits, 9 Gold potions, 2 Terraceous Grunts, and a gold foil Musa Saline!

A lucky find, though it may be quite a while before I see another gold foil legendary!

InvestYGator got Life Focus. I got 0.599 (0.091 + 0.088 + 0.115 + 0.127 + 0.124 + 0.054) SPS, 6 (3 + 3) Gold potions, 4 (1 + 3) Legendary potions, and 2 Pembrook Nymphs.

I opened some of the Chaos Legion packs that I had been getting as rewards for the past few seasons. Here’s what I got in the first couple of packs:

An average pack, with just the base single rare card.
Not a promising start to my pack opening overall, with another basic pack.

Guild Brawls:

Guild Brawl #146, playing Bronze League Gold Foil Only. The guild came in 3rd to last place. No luck finding new recruits since we kicked out a bunch of people who were inactive.

Vs. SHREDDER7 of 101 – opponent fled

Vs. GARRAKAZEKAGE of SL – SPANISH ACADEMY

Vs. MAXPAIN00 of THE FORGOTTEN LEGION

Vs. GEAR2LUFFY of MITRIIMAN SQUAD

Vs. MARCELO182 of WARLORDS

Vs. DAIS13 of BIRD GANG

Vs. ROSAFARAN of BEARDED BEAVERS

Guild Brawl #147, playing Bronze League Gold Foil Only. The guild came in 3rd to last place, which was frustrating since I put in a pretty strong performance here and at least 2 people just didn’t submit teams for their 8-9 matches each, trashing our standings.

Vs. ARCHYLIKE of T&A LEGION VIII

Vs. MAUMAL of CONSCIOUSNESS

Vs. UNLEASHPOWER of TEAM POSSIBLE PHALANX

Vs. SPLINTERLOVER of TRYHARD GAMING

Vs. TAXGUY of [ZOO]

I opened up one Gladiator pack:

Another basic pack, though only gold foils would help my brawl deck.

The Rest:

Playing in Modern has been a bit of a different experience, as I often can’t use my go to cards from Wild league. Moving both my accounts into Modern would be a good partial solution of what to do about getting monsters to put to work on land. If I move a lot of my Wild only cards over to land, it would fill a decent chunk of those worker slots.

However, it is a bit of a grind to get back through the lower leagues, particularly Bronze. In the past, I wrote that the game seems to really pick up in Gold league, so it’s a bit of a reminder that the new player portion of the game still does need improvement. I’m not sure how many people would play without the reward aspect of earning tokens and game items.

My goal for the rest of the season is to try to grind my main account out of Bronze in modern, while still getting a few chests in Gold wild league. I don’t want to buy energy to play through Bronze faster, since I’d be paying Gold rates. Though, I will be curious to see if a lot of bots get shifted to Wild that don’t have the cards for it.

They might not have that much trouble, since a lot of bots are theoretically getting booted into that league, so they can play one another. There also isn’t a timeline yet for when the bot ban will go into effect. But, it is a nice boost for the morale of people who have been complaining about bots for the last few years.

That’s about it for this week! Thank you for reading, and I’ll be back in about a week with a season wrap up. If you have any questions or feedback please let me know in the comments below!
